Course Information
The Liberty and Justice for All curriculum is ideal for adult education courses, Sunday school series, or an informal discussion groups regardless of faith. The course has three primary goals:
- To introduce a set of skills designed to raise the level of respect and civility present in conversations involving faith and politics.
- To provide a basic overview of social and faith values derived from major historical documents, including the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, as well as teachings from the Old and New Testament.
- To increase awareness of the importance of people of faith being involved in conflict resolution and the political process.
Course Highlights:
- The course is lay-led. Clergy need not participate.
- The course can help congregations, organizations and individuals discuss potentially contentious issues.
- Lay facilitators learn skills they may apply to any small group activity.
- Course participants learn how to listen and be heard with understanding, compassion, and respect.
Curriculum:
The professionally developed curriculum, consisting of an orientation and six two-hour sessions, includes the following themes:
- Yearning for Change
- Conceived in Liberty
- God's Passion for Justice
- Separation of Church and State: Then and Now
- Biblical Call to Justice: Jesus and the Prophets
- My Personal Compass
Typical Agenda:
- Opening Contemplation
- Community Building Exercises which reinforce communication skills
- Questions framed around key themes, stimulating conversation
- Triad Discussions that allow participants to share and listen in a smaller group
- Closing Reflection
The curriculum includes a DVD component whose Faculty consists of scholars, historians, theologians, judges and citizens.
The curriculum includes suggested resources for further reading and study.
